Sailors use the sheet bend knot to join two ropes of different sizes. It can also be used to join two ropes of the same size. The knot is performed by passing the end of one rope through a loop of the other, then passing the rope around the loop and under its own standing part. The sheet bend knot typically retains 45–60% of the rope’s strength.
Backpacking
Hikers can use the sheet bend knot to join two lines together, or to connect a line to a corner of a tarp or poncho. It can also be used to create a simple lean-to shelter.
Having one long rope
When you only have two shorter ropes, you can use a sheet bend knot to create one long rope.
